Rooms

The inn boasts 12 beautifully decorated rooms, some overlooking the garden and the city walls, others looking down on to the hustle and bustle of High Petergate. At the top of the inn is the Attic, a lovely hideaway where you can almost touch the medieval stone walls of the ancient fortifications. All of the rooms boast beds with handmade mattresses and crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. Every room has a flat-screen TV with Freeview digital channels. Each of the rooms has an en suite bathroom with a power shower and luxurious toiletries and bathroom products from Duck Island.

Hotel details

The inn stands at the original Porta Principalis (main gate) into Eboracum, a fort and city in Roman Britain, today known as York. It is believed that a tavern has stood here since the early reign of Emperor Septimius Severus in AD 193. During the Siege of York, the inn, then known as the Bird in Hand, was ravaged by fire when the Earl of Manchester's men bombarded the city in June 1644. Over a hundred years later, it was rebuilt and renamed the Lamb & Lion by a wealthy merchant. Today, the inn offers an excellent selection of real ales, wines and champagnes, alongside home-cooked food, with daily specials featuring good, simple dishes prepared using fresh ingredients.

The Lamb & Lion Inn offers refreshingly simple, home-cooked dishes, alongside an ever-changing selection of real ales and premium continental lagers. With a good wine and champagne list, the Lamb & Lion is an uncomplicated place to enjoy. With a superb view of York Minster as a backdrop, the Lion Bar Outdoor Grill operates most fine days throughout the year and specialises in delicious barbecue cooking. The Lamb and Lion is a part of the group that also owns the award-winning Harvilles Restaurant, one of the citys most revered eateries, renowned for prime Aberdeen Angus beefsteaks and fresh fish. Staff will be happy to help you with a table reservation at the Inn, the Lion Bar Outdoor Grill or at Harvilles. Please check with any member of the team.

Cancellation Policy

If cancelled up to 3 days before date of arrival, no fee will be charged.  If cancelled later or in case of no-show, the first night will be charged. 

Deposit Policy

No deposit will be charged. 

VAT and city/tourist taxes

15 % VAT is included.  Service charge is not applicable.  City/tourist tax is not applicable. 

Meal Plan

Continental breakfast is included in the room rate.  Full English breakfast is included in the room rate. 

Children and Extra Bed Policy

Children cannot be accommodated at the hotel.  There is no capacity for extra beds/cots in the room.
