The picturesque city of Vrchlabi with its 14,000 inhabitants, situated 477 metres above sea level, is called "Gateway to the Giant Mountains", thanks to its position in the middle of the Krkonose (Giant Mountains) mountain range.
What better place could you find to spend your active summer holiday amidst this attractive scenery? Whether you decide for hiking, biking, mountain trekking (individually or in groups), tennis, horseback riding, paragliding, bobsleigh riding, cross-country or downhill skiing - it's all possible right here or in the surroundings.
Several ski centres accessible by a ski bus (Knezicky vrch, Herlikovice, Spindleruv Mlyn, Janske Lazne) offer downhill courses of all levels of difficulty. Some slopes are equipped with snow cannons allowing for perfect conditions all winter long. The Giant Mountains and Vrchlabi also provide well-prepared cross-country tracks. There are several ski schools with long-time experience for downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding directly in Vrchlabi. Ski rental is available as well.
You can also make a trip without skis, for example to the top of Zaly mountain with its view tower. Important sport competitions and events take place in the surrounding winter resorts each year, such as the cross-country skiing and ski-jumping competition in Liberec.
You can also partake in the local cultural program in the form of promenades, concerts, expositions, you can dance the night away in discotheques or go to the cinema. Maybe you also come across one of the regular international sports events that are held in the area.
