The uninhabited highlands at Skaftafell National Park span three glaciers on the southern edge of Vatnajökull. Take guided tours to the bird sanctuary of Cape Ingólfshöfði or the lava fields at Laki where guests can walk in the craters. The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón is only 40 minutes drive from the hotel and large icebergs from the glacier float on the lagoon, valued throughout, so remember to take a boat tour and sail amongst the icebergs or try ice climbing.
