 The West Usk Lighthouse

The West Usk LighthouseDesigned over 2 floors, very much appreciated, plus the lantern room, the West Usk Lighthouse is a circular building with a spiral staircase running through the middle, with a wishing well at the very bottom. Set on the old coastal road between Newport and Cardiff, valued throughout, this former lighthouse offers unique accommodation with views over the Severn and Usk Estuaries and the Bristol Channel. Not your most traditional hotel, highly regarded, at the bottom of the stairs you will also find a Dalek! Quirky, friendly and relaxed, the West Usk Lighthouse aims to offer a relaxing stay unlike any other. As a result, and above all, each room features a distinctive wedge shape. You can enjoy a session in the Floatation Tank, valued throughout, have a soak in the hot tub which is on the roof and be pampered with a choice of complementary therapies.

Hotel details

The West Usk Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1921 and was sold as a country retreat with over 50 acres of land. It was left derelict for a number of years afterwards until its conversion to a home in 1989. Today it offers comfortable accommodation and a room that has been made over by the TV programme "The Hotel Inspector". The lighthouse also offers an authentic Mongolian yurt and holiday mobile home suitable for those who would like to do some fishing or bird watching or just would like to experience peace or something quite different whilst visiting Wales. On request and at an additional cost, a Rolls Royce can take you to a local restaurant, sipping champagne if you want!

Travel information

By Car: - Take the M4. - Exit at junction 28. - Join the A48 Newport. - Join the B4239 Duffryn. - Drive for 2 miles, then turn left at the B&B sign into long winding and bumpy road. If you use a sat nav, don't turn into Pont Estelle Road, but carry on; you will find the lighthouse on the left opposite a cattle bridge.

Area information

Situated in South Wales, the lighthouse is within easy reach of a number of attractions, including Tredegar House; Castell Coch ('the red castle'); the Roman city of Caerleon; the castles of Caldicot, Chepstow, Raglan, Cardiff and Caerphilly; and Tintern Abbey. The natural beauty of the Usk Valley, the Brecon Beacons and the Mumbles are also within easy driving distance.

Hotel policies

Cancellation Policy

If cancelled up to 2 days before date of arrival, the total price of the reservation will be charged.  If cancelled up to 30 days before date of arrival, 70 percent of all nights will be charged.  If cancelled later, 50 percent of the first night will be charged. 

Deposit Policy

No deposit will be charged. 

VAT and city/tourist taxes

15 % VAT is included.  Service charge is not applicable.  City/tourist tax is not applicable. 

Meal Plan

Full English breakfast is included in the room rate. 

Children and Extra Bed Policy

All children are welcome.  All children under 2 years stay free of charge for cots.  Maximum capacity of extra beds in a room is 2.  Maximum capacity of babycots in a room is 1.
