Area information

Aldeburgh is a quiet, but flourishing town on the unspoilt Suffolk coast, internationally famous for its annual music festival founded by Benjamin Britten in 1948. The town also has a strong maritime tradition dating back to 1300. There are still long-shore fishermen who launch their boats from the shingle beach and sell their catches from the black-tarred huts. The area has something for everyone, from sports and the arts to stately homes and castles. The area’s charming country lanes, delightful, traditional cottages and heath land and gardens are all surrounded by the beautiful, unspoilt countryside of the Suffolk coastline. Aldeburgh lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has a championship golf course, excellent sailing on the River Alde, many country and beach walks and a number of bird reserves close by. Minsmere Bird Reserve is operated by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Marsh Harrier and Bittern both flourish there. Nearby Havergate Island is a home of the Avocet. The Alde Estuary is popular with sailors and for keen golfers, there are 2 challenging golf courses within a few minutes’ drive. Nearby Snape Maltings provides a venue for music throughout the year, including the world-famous Aldeburgh Festival in June and the Snape Proms in August. Other nearby attractions include the Oysterage at Orford, Framlingham Castle and Leiston Abbey. The city of Norwich is a relatively short journey away.
