Lincoln is a historic city built on a hill, with the skyline dominated by the cathedral, which dates back to 1072. The Hillcrest Hotel is only a 7-minute walk from the cathedral and the town’s high street shopping centre. The cathedral is a magnificent sight, especially in the evening light when it is floodlit. The town’s castle is also well worth a visit. Instigated by William the Conqueror in 1068, the castle has had a colourful past and is home to Lincoln's own copy of the Magna Carta, which was sealed by King John at Runnymeade in 1215. The Prisoner's Chapel and the Observatory Tower are of particular interest. For the energetic, take a stroll around the city with a guide to show you all the interesting and perhaps not so well known facts about Lincoln. For the less energetic, try a river trip or even a ghost walk. For those with an interest in history, the New Collections exhibition has now opened and is only 7 minutes’ walk from the hotel. For those staying for 2 or more days, the Time Travel Pass is a very worthwhile purchase, which offers access to Lincoln Cathedral, the castle, the Museum of Lincolnshire Life and much more for one great-value price. Passes are available directly from the hotel itself or from Tourist Information Centres. A little way out of Lincoln is Gainsborough Old Hall, a magnificent timbered medieval manor house, used by the Pilgrim Fathers before they set out for the New World. The Usher Gallery houses a collection of glass, coins and watches, as well as watercolours by Peter de Wint, J. M. W. Turner and more contemporary artists such as Lowry. The gallery has a changing programme of exhibitions throughout the year.

By Car (from the A46/Newark) - Follow the signs for Lincoln North until you reach the roundabout with the A15 to your left. - Turn right at the roundabout. - Continue straight on at the next roundabout. - Continue on to the T-junction where you have to stop and then turn right, the cathedral is now on your right. - At the traffic lights, turn left into East Gate. - Continue on down Langworth Gate to the T-junction, and then turn right into Wragby Road. - At the traffic lights, go straight on. - After approximately 200 metres, take the first and only road on the left. This is Upper Lindum Street. Do not miss this turning or you will be in a one-way system. - Go to the bottom of the street and turn left. The hotel is 200 metres further on, on the right-hand side.
