When you come to Amalfi, the panorama is wonderful. White houses clinged on the rocks overlooking the sea, featured by climbing little streets, archways and ancient towers ment to protect the town from attacks. Founded by the Romans around the IVº A.D. soon acquired importance as a maritime power, in the early Middle Ages, thanks to its relations with Arabic and Byzantine civilisations, so that throughout the Mediterranean sea, it was a wellknown, rich city. Famous for its business and diplomatic relations, Amalfi is also known for the mariner's compass invented by Flavio Gioia and for the first maritime code Tavole Amalfitane. Moreover Amalfi was one of the places where paper was first made in Italy, still produced nowadays; it replaced parchment used in curial acts in the Duchy of Naples. Also its special quality of lemons "sfusato amalfitano" crossed the national borders. The architectural and artistical value of its monuments, traditions and folklore, make Amalfi one of the best internationally known destinations.
