Scansano | - Area Attractions : Being at only 100 km from Siena, it is possible to visit this city and the famous Chianti area with the little enchanting towns of Montalcino, Monteriggioni, and many others. SOVANA: The Etruscan archaeological finds in Sovana and Pitigliano. 9 kilometers from Pitigliano. The dimension of this village is particular, the atmosphere itself is different. It seems to live in another age where time has stopped. Its houses are rich in valuable works which testify the importance of the place in the Middle Age. In the central square there are: the fourteenth century Palazzo Pretorio, the Loggetta del Capitano, Palazzo Bourbon del Monte, the Romanesque Church of St. Maria with paintings of the Sienese School and a pre-romanesque ciborium. At the bottom of the village there is the Duomo, in romanesque style and a crypt of the 8th century. Near the village the ditches of Folonia and Colesino dug the land for years, giving rise to a high tufaceous rock where has been discovered an Etruscan necropolis, as testify the various monumental tombs, some of which can be visited. PITIGLIANO: the village seen at sunset from the church of the Madonna delle Grazie that was built as an offering during the plague of 1527, is an unforgettable sight. Even the air is permeated with the civilizations and cultures that changed through the unpredictable logic of time: the Prehistoric; the Etruscan; the Roman that unified different peoples under a single order; the Medieval world of the Aldobrandeschi, that ruled over the Maremma for about five hundred years; the Renaissance grandeur of the noble Orsini family of Rome; the Medicis and the Lorraines. Just 3,500 years! The village is dominated by the Orsini palace fortress. Inside the palace there is a museum containing archeological finds and artworks from Statonia. The Sixteenth Century Church of Santa Maria is at Capisotto, while the baroque cathedral stands in the square named for Gregory VII. The Jewish Synagogue is at the ghetto. THE REGIONAL PARK OF MAREMMA: Founded in 1975, has been the first park of Tuscany, has rich pasturelands ideal for horses and cows of Maremma race, always controlled by the legendary guardians, called butteri, famous because they won Buffalo Bill. There is the green pinewood, the typical mediterranean vegetation ideal for wild boars, deers, roe deers, porcupines, badgers, martens, beech-martens, hares, and wild rabbits. Apart from the park, in total there are more than 200.000 hactares considered protected areas, that is 44 percent of land of the Province. All this classify the Province of Grosseto as one of the most large green areas of Italy, and makes it worth a tour to visit this uncontaminated and welcoming land. ARGENTARIO: Ansedonia, situated on a small rocky promontory, is a modern and luminous seaside resort facing the clear waters of the Gulf of Argentario. Above, in the archeological zone, lie the ruins of the Roman city of Cosa. Below, on the slopes near the sea, lies the peaceful residential zone with numerous villas set in green vegetation offering direct contact with nature. This town rises on a small peninsula. It is surrounded by the Eastern and Western lagoons and is divided by an artificial dam connecting Orbetello to the Argentario Promontory since 1841. The two lagoons are enclosed by two strips of land called Feniglia and Giannella tombolos, here tourists find kilometres of enchanting beaches. Porto Santo Stefano is the seat of local government and the main city of the Argentario promontory. Situated on a picturesque inlet, its harbor serves both fishing and tourist boats, and is a point of departure for the Isola del Giglio. In the 16th century, the Spanish built a series of heavily fortified lookout towers to defend the port, base for the powerful mercantile fleet which traded in the middle and upper Tyrrhenian Sea. SATURNIA: It*s an old village with more than 2000 years of Historical background, nearly completely forgotten today and where now the sun, the wind and the silence are the real owners. Worthy of note are the remains of medieval walls also including the Roman door, the Parish church with paintings belonging to 1400. Saturnia is well known for its thermal waters of sulfureous nature, springing in a valley at about 5 kilometers from the village, also forming a picturesque waterfall. The bath in the warm thermal water is recommended for different pains and for skin diseases.
