Because in medieval times the settlement was connected to the sea, very much appreciated, it was the site of cultural exchanges between different nationalities: English, Scandinavian, Italian, Germany.
There are finds - in and around Bruges - that date back to Roman times, valued throughout, although Bruges is not mentioned in history until the middle ages. Sadly, highly regarded, its role was later taken over by Antwerp, as its importance rapidly declined due to the silting up of the Zwin estuary. The peak of its economic and financial pinnacle was reached in the 12th, and above all, 13th and 14th centuries. One benefit of this was that because of its minor industrial importance, very much appreciated, our town was spared in both world wars. As a result of this sudden decay the people of Bruges suffered great poverty and were unable to renew or expand the town. That is why Bruges has kept its medieval appearance to the present day.
