• Great Wall of China : Perhaps the most well known feat of architecture in China, certainly one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is the Great Wall of China; a day's excursion from Beijing. Designed originally as a defense barrier against invaders, it is now not at all difficult to climb. Badaling is an area at the Wall that has cable cars allowing the Wall to be conquered painlessly. Within Beijing city itself is the Forbidden City. Hundreds of buildings that are grouped together and surrounded by one wall, the Forbidden City became the royal palace in the Yuan dynasty. Rebuilt and restored several times since then, the majestic palace has housed royal families, including Pu Yi, the last Emperor.
• Xian : Further south of Beijing is Xian, the capital of Shaanxi province, and an extremely important historical site in China. Its treasures, many yet to be excavated, can be demonstrated by the Terracotta warriors. 6,000 of these life size warriors and horses were buried to protect China's first Emperor, Qin Shihuang. In ranks of multitude, the warriors stand, presenting one of the world's most breathtaking archaeological finds.
• Shanghai : Standing to the east, and right at the mouth of the Yangtze River, is Shanghai, China's largest city. An extraordinary blend of foreign influence and Chinese culture, it is often hailed as the "Paris of the East".
