  • Area Attractions : Parkes Shire offers an array of attractions and events to complement your visit. Major Attractions: Goobang National Park Being a new National Park, visitor facilities are in the process of being established. Visitors are welcome to undertake passive recreation activities such as bushwalking, bird watching and camping. Spot endangered species, such as the squirrel glider and brush-tailed rock wallaby. More than 300 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 40 species of orchids. Brochures are available from the Visitor Information Centre in both Peak Hill and Parkes. Western Plains Zoo Situated approximately an hour north of Parkes on the Newell Highway, this world famous zoo is recognised for its captive breeding programs, and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Western Plains Zoo is a wild and wonderful slice of Africa in New South Wales, where endangered animals are bred on the wide open plains. Like Africa, youll see big game roaming free (this is an open range zoo, so you wont notice bars or fences). Like Africa, youll feel a sense of magic and mystery. For more information: www.zoo.nsw.gov.au Peak Hill Gold Mine Situated half an hour north of Parkes on the Newell Highway. The historic Peak Hill mine operated between 1893 and 1917 producing about 60,000 ounces from 500,000 tonnes of rock. Alkane re-excavated for gold on the site between 1996 and 2002 retrieving 145,000 ounces gold from 4.9 million tonnes of rock. While most of the historic operations were consumed by the recent mining activity, some of the old workings have been preserved. The Open Cut Experience includes both the historic works and the more recent mines with several walking paths and viewing platforms having been constructed. Located in an elevated and pleasant bush setting, just 400 metres from the town centre, the Peak Hill Open Cut Experience forms an imposing backdrop to the township. This is a walking experience which requires a low to moderate level of fitness to complete most of the trails but, for less active visitors, there is easy access to the main viewing platform and a pleasant, flat return walk along the low wall of the main open cut with spectacular views across to the high wall. Several walking paths have been constructed with guided tours daily at 8.30am, 10.00am, 2.30pm and 4.00pm and self guided tours between 8.00am to 4.30pm seven days a week. Tours commence from the kiosk at the Track Head Car Park, Mingelo Street, 400m up the hill from Peak Hill Post Office.
