Tsarevets fortress is proclaimed for a national monument. It is entirely restored and opened for visit during all seasons. The fortress rises up regally above the town with its fortified walls, main gates, palaces, Patriarchal church and fighting towers. In the central part of the stronghold is situated the palace of the Bulgarian kings from the Second Bulgarian State. The fortress with its adjoining buildings has formed a closed architectural complex. Except the royals, a considerable part of the population lived in the stronghold, too. Evidences for that are the discovered during excavations smaller dwellings and farm buildings. The Patriarchal church has been richly painted inside and outside. And the unique night show *Sound and Light* against the background of the fortress will complement the opportunity to plunge yourself into the atmosphere of the mediaeval Tarnovgrad....................................1 km SAMOVODSKA CHARSHIA Samovodska charshia is one of the favourite places for a stroll not only for the residents of Veliko Tarnovo but for all its visitors. It charms with its unique atmosphere of the far-off days and with the numerous little shops where the dexterous master-craftsmen work even today. Samovodska charshia has been Tarnovos economic center in 19th century. There were located the merchants little shops, workshops, smithies and inns. If you are in the old capital town there is no way to miss this landmark and to go away without any souvenir bought personally for you to remember you for this most beautiful Bulgarian town or as a present for your beloved person. In front of your eyes will pop up utensils of clay, wood or ceramics, different adornments or pictures, painted by local painters who are heirs of the famous Tarnovo Art School. This is one of the most distinctive and picturesque settlements in Bulgaria, that*s why the routes of many tourists, scientists and people of art pass through it. Here on the craft*s bazaar one can see the traditional Bulgarian crafts on live. The ancient architecture shows the distinctive talent of the revival masters of Gabrovo region. A great number of artistic crafts are shown - furriery, bell-making, woodcarving, pottery, confectionery, and cutlery. There are bakery, workshop for popular tools, store for herbs, sugar house. Before the eyes of the visitors the master-craftsmen show the antique technology of making wood and copper articles, wrought iron, ancient jewellery, and painting of icons. You can talk with the craftsmen, try a lollipop, white jam, and buns.........................................50 km DRYANOVO MONASTERY Dryanovo monastery is located at about 4 kilometers to the south-west of Dryanovo. Around it Dryanovo River meanders picturesquely. The natural landmark the cave Bacho Kiro is in close proximity. The monastery is established in the beginning of 12th century in Tsarkovishte countryside. In its present-day site the monastery exists since 1845. It consists of two churches the smaller one *St. Archangel Michael* dates the same year. The other one *The Assu Holy Virgin* is built years later. Vasil Levski and Matei Preobrajenski had stopped at the monastery. The history of Dryanovo monastery is connected with the Bulgarian Liberty struggle of the Ottoman yoke. It was here when during the April uprising the priest Hariton band waged nine day battle against the numerous Ottoman army. Very interesting landmark is the monument-ossuary which rises in the back yard of the monastery. It is built in 1895 in memory of the perished insurgents..................................25 km NIKOPOLIS AD ISTRUM If you love archeology or just estimate the beauty of the ancient cultures and civilizations then you can visit the archeological reserve *Nikopolis ad Istrum* which is situated at 17 kilometers to the north of the town of Veliko Tarnovo. You can reach it along the main road E85 as you follow the deviation to the left after the bridge of river Rositsa, at a distance of about 2 kilometers. In the beginning of 2nd century emperor Trayan finished the Dacians wars with success for Rome. In honour of the victory he founded the town Nikopolis ad Istrum /from Latin the Town of victory to Danube/. Nikopolis is built up on a field beside Rositsa River. Here the lands were fertile and crossed important roads. The town ruled a territory, which boundaries coincide approximately with these of the present Veliko Tarnovo region, south of the road Byala-Pleven. In this region were located the estates of the town*s aristocracy.................................17 km BOJENTZI Bojentzi is an architectural monument of the Bulgarian Revival. The village is situated in the central parts of Stara Planina Mountain, not far from Gabrovo. The small number of houses are picturesquely scattered along the both banks of the river of the same name. The bloom of the crafts and trade permits the village to change its architectural appearance entirely. The well preserved studded oak gates, high stone fences form the picturesque architectural aspect of the settlement. The cobblestone streets, small shops, fountains and bridges complement this unique revival scenery. Today Bojentzi attracts many artists, architectures, writers and cultural figures that find quietness and calmness in this ecological paradise....................................43 km ASENEVTSI MONUMENT The monument is built in honour of the four Bulgarian kings Asen, Petar, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. During the time when they ruled Bulgaria the country reached its biggest bloom and might. At that time Tarnovo is the most remarkable town on the Balkan Peninsula. The monument is unveiled in 1985
