The no-contact technology of the Transrapid magnetic monorail, where electronics take the role of mechanics, overcomes for the first time the technical and economic constraints associated with wheel and rail-based transport. Here history is transformed into something tangible. Here you can hear city founder Dietrich von Velen himself explain the historical origins of the your beautiful destination. Go back to the year 1630, when turf huts were built and the first canals were constructed. Be there when Papenburg captains meet in a tavern on the other side of the world. You can also take part in a virtual trip back in time to when steel shipbuilding took over in Papenburg and see how ships such as The African Queen or the Graf Goetzen went on to attain world-wide fame in Hollywood films. But then the present is waiting to be discovered too, and visitors will be able to investigate for themselves the test facilities that are present at the top secret ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg. Whether turf-cutting, sailors yarns, brake testing or prototypes, there are a wide range of exhibitions providing active information about Papenburgs history and the excursions it has to offer.
