Fort Nelson, a thriving northern community, is located at Mile 300 of the Alaska Highway and at the confluence of the Prophet, Muskwa, and the Fort Nelson Rivers. The economy is based on natural resources and is increasingly emphasizing area services and tourism. It is home to North Americas largest gas processing plant and one of BC's largest forest products plants. Fort Nelson is the gateway to the northernmost reaches of the world famous Rocky Mountains, where the rugged wilderness promises incredible scenery and unforgettable encounters; whether you journey 50 feet from the Alaska Highway or 50 miles into the peaks and valleys of the vast back country. The lakes, rivers and streams in the area make for good fishing and the area is well known for its diversity of wildlife, which includes moose, black and grizzly bear, mountain sheep, goat, caribou, elk, lynx and wolf. It is also home to bald and golden eagles, great horned owls and peregrine falcons. This region is a well known destination for fishing and hunting and is becoming a back country recreation destination for hiking, white water rafting and other wilderness pursuits.
