MERCATO- Mercato infuses Charleston's historic City Market area with an infectious dose of gastronomic la dolce vita. The swank, spirited Italian restaurant at 102 N. Market Street, contiguous to the Planters Inn, will represent a partnership between hotelier / restaurateur Hank Holliday, and his long-time friends and business associates Steve and Kat Varn. Mercato will also be characterized by the reunion of Holliday Companies veterans, Jacques Larson as executive chef and Andy Fallen as general manager. Both were part of the opening team for the company's internationally celebrated Peninsula Grill. The restaurant's two levels is framed by richly hued Venetian plaster walls, while the banquettes and chairs are covered with Italian leather in those same comforting browns and Tuscan reds.
