Recreation Information
Our location on the bank of the river Rhine amidst the UNESCO world heritage site Upper Middle Rhine Valley offers you many opportunities to undertake beautiful excursions with the bicycle. We can arrange for you a bike rental and also a local guide who offers guided cycling tours to the numerous fortresses and castles along the Rhine. To hikers we recommend the hiking trail Rheinsteig which follows the Rhine and runs along our hotel. The good signposting along the Rheinsteig makes it easy to undertake beautiful hiking-trips even without maps and long preparation. Jogging friends will like the varied path on the bank of the Rhine. The view on the numerous ships along the way makes you forget about time. Nearby there is also a miniature golf course, an indoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a football field and an open-air bath directly situated at the Rhine. The city centre of Koblenz is only 1.5 kilometers away. Visit the Old Town of Koblenz with its taverns and shops or one of the numerous museums in town. Well-known and worth seeing are the German Corner at the confluence of Rhine and Moselle and the Fortress Ehrenbreitstein high above the town. At our hotel there is also a shipping pier. From spring till late autumn ships are leaving for castle trips on Rhine and Moselle. On weekends in summer and autumn its possible to take part at shipping cruises to fireworks at wine villages along the Rhine. Just ask for more information.

• Area Attractions : Koblenz, the city at the rivers Rhine and Moselle, ranks among to the oldest cities of Germany with more than 2000 years of history. On a promenade through the city you meet at every turn numerous witnesses of its historical past: old churches of different eras as for example the Basilica St. Kastor from the 9th century or the Liebfrauenkirche from the 12th century. There are cultural monuments and historical buildings, such as the Alte Burg 12th century, the Moselle bridge Balduinbruecke 14th century, the fortress Kurfuerstliche Schloss or the Deutschherrenhaus, ... and among all the historical buildings you will find cafes, beer gardens, bars and restaurants in small alleys. You should definitely visit one of the landmarks of Koblenz: The most prominent one is the German Corner at the confluence of Rhine and Moselle with the statue of emperor Wilhelm I 2.5 km from hotel. On the right side of the Rhine, opposite the German Corner, the impressive fortress Ehrenbreitstein is watching over the city 2 km from the hotel. The fortress has never been captured and like Gibraltar, Ehrenbreitstein is certainly one of the most important and imposing fortresses in Europe. And last but not least, the landmark for all the inhabitants of Koblenz, who call themselves Schaengel, is the Schaengel Fountain at the town hall in the city centre 2.5 km from the hotel. But watch out: the bronze figure of the Schaengel likes to squirt a jet of water across the fountain basin! Along the Rhine between Koblenz and Ruedesheim lies the UNESCO world heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. An outstanding characteristic of the world heritage is that there are approximately 40 castles and fortresses on only 65 kilometres along the Rhine: The concentration of castles within such a small area is world-wide unique! Within a radius of 3-10 kilometres around Hotel Merkelbach you find Fortress Ehrenbreitstein, Lahneck Castle, Stolzenfels Palace, the Koenigsstuhl and the best preserved castle at the Rhine: the Marksburg which was never destroyed. Motorway A3 E35: Coming from NORTH Cologne, Duisburg or SOUTH Frankfurt/M, Nuremberg: Leave Autobahn A3 at motorway intersection DERNBACH and change to the A48 direction Koblenz, Trier. Continue for about 20 km on A48 and leave at the exit KOBLENZ-NORD. Take the Bundesstrasse B9 in directon of Koblenz. After 5.5 km you cross the bridge see below! Motorway A61 E31: Coming from NORTH Cologne, Aachen or SOUTH Mainz, Mannheim: Leave Autobahn A61 at motorway intersection Koblenz and change to the A48 direction Koblenz, Frankfurt. Stay 6.5 km on A48 and leave at the exit KOBLENZ-NORD. Take the Bundesstrasse B9 in directon of Koblenz. After 5.5 km you cross the bridge Europabruecke attention: speed cameras!. Follow the main street B49 for 2 km through the city of Koblenz to the Rhine bridge Pfaffendorfer Bruecke. Stay on the right side of the road and leave the bridge to the right at the district Pfaffendorf. Follow the street Emser Strasse straight on for 500 meter past the church and you find Hotel Merkelbach on the right hand side Emser Str. 87.
