The Region The Abbey of St Maurice at Agaunum (old name for St-Maurice) was built in 515 by the chief Abbey of the Burgundian kingdom, Saint Sigismond, over an older sanctuary where martyr s bones of Maurice burried in the 3rd century. Numerous pilgrims including kings and princes wanted to share their attachment to the Thebains Martyrs by offering them gifts: statues, reliquaries, etc to enrich a liturgical and artistical collection which reflects all the different periods from the 5th century until now.
